What makes us sleep more?
This question kept occurring to me, ever since I had noticed how little inclined to sleep my nephew was at an age of less than two years. As he grows his disinclination only grows more and more. Why, I wonder. When nothing stops him from sleeping, while most of the grown-ups would be only too happy to have more time to sleep, even if they have had enough time to fulfill the physical need of rest. If I am generalizing too much, let me constrain it to myself. I sometimes do feel like not getting up, though I am not really feeling sleepy. Its not even what happens when you fall asleep while studying a boring subject. Everything is fine that way; still I do not feel like opening my eyes and getting up. Why could it be so?
To find an answer, I had to consciously notice, when do I normally feel like that and the answer was simple enough. It happens exactly when there is something to be faced in the life you do not want to face - a quarrel which will come up again, some frustrating task which can not be avoided, a mistake which will embarrass you again, a meeting which would be irritatingly tasking or a person whom you would want to avoid at any cost, but can't. All these unwanted, irksome, bad things of life and the reaction is to avoid them by not getting up and be ready for the world. Only if it were possible. For my nephew (and for any child in his situation), now three years old, there is nothing like this. Even if his mother was little angry with him yesterday, both of them would have forgotten it. Even if he made some mistake yesterday, he has no embarrassment to face for it - either it is not considered embarrassing for him, or he never realizes that it should be embarrassing. He has a day to look forward to, where he will do all he would want to. Few constraints which could come would not be too difficult to overcome. If the mother does not agree to something, father would or someone else around would; more likely than not, that is.
And is it not true that we do feel like getting up at the earliest when there is something exciting to be looked forward to during the day - a lovable person to meet with, a challenging and interesting task to be handled or an agreeable group to go out with?
Pretty cliched a proposition possibly, but so true in the daily life.
